New high-tech laundry opens in Harlem
“Doing laundry is never fun,” says Ikenna Okpala, a City College senior who lives in Harlem.
Now doing laundry may have gotten better in Harlem thanks to a new LG Laundry Lounge at 139th and Amsterdam, across the street from our campus.
“This makes doing laundry more worth my while,” says Okpala. “It’s well laid out with great LG and environmentally friendly powered machines.”
The Laundry Lounge, launched by LG, the company who’s slogan is “life is good,” is the first ever to be introduced in North America. With great traffic from the community and campus, the company hopes this could be the first of many Laundry Lounges in the area.
LG banked on alot of students and members of the Upper West Side community wanting the combination of washers and dryers and entertainment, including LED HDTVs and free internet access. The Laundry Lounge offers a home-like feel as a distraction from what can feel like a boring, time-consuming chore. And the LG powered machines reduce wasted energy and water, a plus for the community and the environment.
“With this new concept, we’re offering patrons a fresh experience by integrating key components of the home in public laundry venues, confirming the notion that life doesn’t have to stop because you have to do laundry,” said Sam Kim, Appliance President, LG Electronics USA, in a press release on PR Newswire.
Even students who live outside of West Harlem say they would take advantage of this new laundromat experience. “I would bring my laundry all the way over here,” says Chelsea Jones, a City College senior who walks from East Harlem and travels 30 minutes to school. ” It looks like laundry heaven with the large windows and white and red interior.”
Senior Seymone Kelly agrees. “I would love to have one by my house because every other hour a machine is breaking down at the laundromat by my house,” says Kelly, 22, an English major.
With the Laundry Lounge buzz around the community, students are excited and hopeful there will be more to come in Harlem.
