Where can students on a budget see high-quality cultural performance? On campus!
by Jissel Garcia
On the night of October 21, 2011, Aaron Davis Hall sprung to life as a crowd of hundreds celebrated Ailey II. The sold-out performance was held at the larger Marian Anderson Theater, which welcomed excited students, faculty, and the general public to take part in this anxiously awaited event.
Ailey II, the junior division of the famed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, boasts a mixture of young talent coupled with astute choreography from some of the nation’s finest. With other high-end performances like these scheduled, CCNY aims to bring the arts and entertainment to its community.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring world-class fine and performing artists to campus at a very low cost to our students and our faculty and administration,” says CCNY President, Lisa S. Coico. “The Alvin Ailey II performance [this past] Friday, along with Paul Taylor II’s performance in the spring gives our students a chance to see some of the best of the best.”
Surely, Friday night made it clear that CCNY has upped the ante. Ailey II delivered three immaculate sets, Shards, The Legacy of Inheritance, and Reference Point, with each number seemingly telling a story that was both poised and fluid in movement.
Greg Shanck, the new managing director of Aaron Davis Hall, realizes the value that such events add to the college. “[Performances such as these] augment the cultural hub of this city, and they offer another reason to bring people to our campus,” he states. With a jam-packed brochure of upcoming events ranging from Lillias White in concert to a Ray Santos tribute which Shanck dubs as his “baby project,” it is easy to see the amount of planning and effort given to this new venture at Aaron Davis Hall.
“Our new president has a strong passion and belief in the performing and visual arts, and she believes it should be a part of everyone’s daily life. Therefore, City College has taken an active role in presenting more events like these,” said Shanck. “It really adds to the quality of life on campus. We made tickets affordable to students because we want them to come and enjoy themselves.”
The key seems to be our community partnerships with organizations such as Harlem Stage whom, at one point, used to manage Aaron Davis Hall. “We can’t do it alone,” confessed Shanck. “We have to engage other people, because it’s about being able to provide for our campus, community and beyond. It’s exciting.”
In the works are hopeful partnerships with the Apollo Theater and Alianza Dominicana, among others.
CCNY students say they are excited about the new performing arts agenda. “It’s flattering,” says Deena Morales, a CCNY sophomore. “All these big name schools always have things to boast about and here we are, in the heart of one of the most richly cultural communities in the city, and people aren’t aware of how enriching our curricular and creative programs are. It makes me proud.”
